Description

By Jayson Kerr Dobney and Craig J. Inciardi

Play It Loud celebrates the musical instruments that gave rock and roll its signature sound. Seven engrossing essays by veteran music journalists and scholars discuss the technical developments that fostered rock's seductive riffs and driving rhythms; the evolution of the classic lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums; the thrilling innovations and expanded instrumentation musicians have explored to achieve unique effects; the powerful visual impact instruments have had; and the essential role they have played in the most memorable moments of rock and roll history. Abundant photographs depict rock's most iconic instruments—including Jerry Lee Lewis's baby grand piano, Chuck Berry's Gibson ES-350T guitar, John Lennon's twelve-string Rickenbacker 325, Keith Moon's drum set, the white Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock, Joan Jett's Melody Maker, and St. Vincent's signature electric guitar—both in performance and as works of art in their own right. Produced in collaboration with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this astounding book goes behind the music to offer a rare, in-depth look at the instruments that inspired the musicians and made possible the songs we know and love.

Jayson Kerr Dobney is Frederick P. Rose Curator in Charge, Department of Musical Instruments at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Craig J. Inciardi is curator and director of acquisitions at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I bought this for my guitar playing husband, who adored the exhibit at the Met. He loves it. He flips through and remembers what he saw at the museum. The book is very well put together and the photos are exquisite.

This is a hefty "coffee table" book, or exhibition catalog, really both._x000D_ It's a beautiful-quality, dramatic and informative walk through some of rock's most iconic instruments on display, from the Met Museum to these pages. Especially guitars but other instruments - and sound equipment (Moog etc.) used by some of the most iconic bands and performers. Beatles, Prince, Lady Gaga (her piano), Emerson's synthesizers, Bo Diddley's square guitar, Hendrix's guitar, drum kits, McCartney's Hofner bass, sitars (classic and electric), show costumes, and more._x000D_ _x000D_ The smaller book (booklet, someone called it, though it's bound and high-quality photo pages) is just a taste, though representative and an economical, smaller-footprint gift. In this catalog book, the collection is more exhaustively presented with more background story and (naturally) "museum quality" descriptions, which - I know, as I took notes and photos of some exhibit signs to recall what I was seeing - offer more information than the summary exhibit placards by the displays. In fact, the exhibit was so jam packed - especially with guitars, and people too - it was easy to miss something there "live", and some instruments were grouped and without some descriptive info, might go unidentified. For aficionados of the greatest bands and instruments and legends throughout the golden years of rock & roll, this is a very nice reference, coffee table talking piece, or gift. Open it up, "put another record on", and Play it Loud!

High quality book, would make a nice gift. I've toured the exhibit and saw this book in the gift shop. It is not a piece-by-piece true catalogue of the exhibit, which is what I was hoping for. The most comprehensive info on each exhibit piece is on the museum website.

A gift for our son in-law who is an accomplished rock musician and was not familiar with the exhibit or catalog. He has expressed his gratitude, multiple times and in multiple ways as he has immersed himself in the book.

I could not travel to the exhibit but this catalog is really nice and full of great information and pictures. I would loved to have seen the instrument in person but could not and this catalog helps make up for that. For all Lovers of rock music.
